frustrate BadgersA DISASTROUS batting
collapse cost Saints dearly
as they slipped to a nar-
row home defeat at the
hands ofSt Albans.Replying to St Albans8217
113, Saints lost Ben Wallis
for a duck but Damon
Livermore and Giles
Tilbury took the score to 51-
1.
However, Livermore and
Tilbury went for 32 and 16
respectively and wickets
fell steadily with Simon
Tilbury and Nick Anstead
falling for ducks.
Although Anthony
Anstead made a quickfire
20 and James Sturgeon bat-
ted stoically for 13 not out,
it wasn8217t enough.
Saints8217 fate was sealed
when number 11 Martin
Robinson was bowled by
AsrofKhan.
Earlier, Martin Robinson
and Giles Tilbury took a
wicket apiece as the visitors
slipped to 6-2.
Kyle Sharp joined Yasir
Arafat and the pair put on
60 with Arafat making an
attractive 47.
Darren Shanley was once
again the main wicket taker
with 5-43. Nick Anstead
chipped in with 3-13.
On Sunday, St
Margaretsbury (213-8)
defeated Herts Saracens
League division two side
Abbotts Langley (119) by 91
runs away in the first round
ofthe Herts County Cup.
The visitors batted first
and were given a good start
by James Scarborough and
Dan Livermore who put on
61 for the first wicket
before the former was dis-
missed for 21.
Livermore went on to
make 104 and was given
useful support by Simon
Tilbury (26) and Giles
Tilbury (23).
Christopher Chellew took
4-39 for the hosts.
In reply, Langley never
threatened St
Margaretsbury8217s total with
no batsmen going on to play
a major innings.
Martin Robinson (3-33)
and Joe Anthony (3-24)
were the major wicket tak-
ers for the Saints.
Fragile batting saw St
Margaretsbury8217s second XI
bowled out for just 49 when
they lost by 33 runs at
Hatch End (82, Gary
Bentley 3-31, Kam Raja 4-
30) on what proved to be a
hazardous batting wicket in
division six.
In division 11, St
Margaretsbury8217s third XI
(113) lost by 99 runs at
Welwyn Garden City IV
(212-4).St Albans (113) beat St
Margaretsbury (103) by
10 runs(Saracens Herts League, div one)BROXBOURNE suffered
more frustration at the
weekend as Bishop8217s
Stortford II stubbornly held
on for the draw despite being
under pressure throughout
their run chase.Stortford are currently rid-
ing high in second place in
division three but at 77-8 they
were in real trouble, present-
ing Broxbourne with a great
chance to close the gap on the
leading pack.
But it was not to be as the
visitors8217 tail wagged to earn a
share ofthe points.
Batting first, Broxbourne
made a slow start with the
early loss ofStuart Fryer for a
duck.
Chris Dawson (14) and
Kevin Francis (16) struggled
but Steve Trenchard (39) and
Dan Smith (29) both got their
eye in to move the score on
towards a more respectable
total.
Ben Rosser, standing in as
captain in the absence ofJoel
Bailey, contributed 13 as
Broxbourne were all out for
152.
Mark Moffett and Anthony
Rhodes opened the bowling
for Broxbourne and got the
hosts offto an excellent start.
The pair took two wickets
each as Stortford were left
stuttering at 37-4 and things
looked even better when Dan
Smith (3-12) took the first of
his three wickets shortly after-
wards.
With chances ofvictory
beginning to slip away for
Stortford they adopted a more
defensive approach.
When Donovan Watt
removed the eighth wicket
with the score on only 77 a
Broxbourne victory appeared
likely.
But the visitors clung on
and despite Broxbourne8217s best
efforts the match ended in a
draw.
Other results: Broxbourne II 162 lost to
Totteridge Millhillians III 165-5 by five
wickets in division six; Boxmoor II 248-7
drew with Broxbourne III 233-9 (Jason
Pearce 104, Niall Robinson 66) in divi-
sion 10; Broxbourne IV 275-6 dec (Tom
Hardy 100, David Sinden 80) beat
Chiltern 06 111 (David White 5-14) by
164 runs in division 14.Broxbourne (152) drew

budding young cricketers as school
teams from the region contested the
six-a-side Calypso Cricket
tournament at Sele School, Hertford.
A high quality competition saw boys
from Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 battle it out
in five-over games while lower
school and upper school girls had
their own separate contest.
Richard Hale, Simon Balle, Chauncy,
John Warner, and Sheredes were
among the 64 teams tsking part.
Richard Hale8217s Year 8 team went on
to win the cup with John Warner8217s
girls8217 team victorious in the lower
school age group.
The bottom two teams of each group
went through to a Plate competition
with Sele School winning the Year 10
section and Chauncy B the Year 9
category.
Sele School assistant head Dave
Pearce, who organised the event,
told the Mercury: 8220The standard of
play was excellent and all the teams
who won had to be pretty good to
come through the competition.8221
He also thanked Botany Bay Cricket
Club for the loan of their equipment.ONEpossible candidate
for Young Sports
Personality of the Year
could be athletics star
Antonio Infantino.
The Haileybury College
sprint sensation,
pictured, stormed to the
gold medal in the
English Schools 200m
last summer and
followed it up with
another gold in the UK
Schools Games.
Last year 17-year-old
Infantino, who runs for
Enfield and Haringey
Athletic Club, topped the
national rankings in the
under-17 200m, with a
best time of 21.28
seconds, and was
second in the 100m lists
with a time of 10.55.
In recognition of his
outstanding
performances last
season, Infantino has
been placed on the UK
Athletics world class
talent programme and
recently ran for Great
Britain for the first time in
a match against
Loughborough students
and representatives from
the British Universities
