FOUR members of North Road
Cycling Club took on the Tour
of Wessex Sportive but were
ultimately beaten by the
weather.
The gruelling 300 mile plus race
should have taken three days
but incessant rain on the final
day convinced a deflated
Richard Somerset, Nick Harris,
John McDowall and Allan
Mendelsohn that it was time to
head home.
Day one took the competitors
on a 95-mile route through
Castle Cary, Bruton, Shepton
Mallet, Wells, Cheddar and
Glastonbury. Out of 792
finishers, Mendelsohn crossed
the line 171st in 5:45.31,
Somerset was 445th (6:48.05),
Harris 592nd (7:03.35) and
McDowall 591st (7:03.33).
On the second day they rode
103 miles through the county,
with climbs totalling over
7,000ft.
Mendelsohn was the pick of the
North Roaders, finishing 68th
overall out of 450 starters and
22nd in the 40-49 age group,
covering the course in 6:10.34.
The two days took a lot out of
the quartet and when the
following day brought a deluge,
they made the decision to call it
a day.
8220300-plus miles in three days
was new territory for me,8221 said
Somerset.
8220On the last day we woke up to
a torrential downpour outside
and made a sensible decision
not to carry on.
8220The rain was so heavy we half
expected the event to be
cancelled anyway.
8220I really enjoyed the ride and
was pleased that I got stronger
as the miles ticked by. As long
as it8217s dry next year I hope to
have another go.8221qROUNDseven of the North
Road8217s Ken Davis Salver, saw
champion Dave Candy return to
action but he could only finish
in fifth.
In poor conditions a good ride
from Ian Coles saw him take
the 30 points, finishing in 23:58,
five seconds faster than Simon
Best.
A North Road team of
Somerset, Coles and first-timer
Nick Latimer came second in
the North Mids and Herts Team
Sprint event incorporated into
the latest round of the Welwyn
Track League.
They rode three laps in 1:51.12,
two seconds slower than
Welwyn Wheelers.
In the 10-lap scratch all three
members finished in the bunch,
but in the 10-lap points race Ian
won three sprints to finish
fourth.
Two pairings of North Roaders
entered the Spirit Racing 10-
mile two-up.John McDowall
and Richard Somerset secured
fourth place out of seven
starters with a time of 23.27.
Jim Ewers and Chris Glithero
completed the course in 25.25.http://www.hertsessexnews.co.ukJune 13, 2008 MERCURY M 75BOWLSRESULTSD

blasts 137
for BuryHERTINGFORDBURY
moved
into fifth in Saracens League divi-
sion four as an unbeaten 137 from
record-breaking Daniel Gronert
saw them overpower Harpenden
III by seven wickets.Harpenden posted a very
respectable 177-7 but were pegged
back by an excellent spell ofbowl-
ing from Stephen Rider who fin-
ished with figures of5-56,
The undoubted star of
Hertingfordsbury8217s reply was
Gronert who raced to his 137 off99
balls. He hit eight sixes 8211 a record
for Bury in a league match. The
game was won in the 34th over as
Bury reached 181-3.
COUNTY HALL
retained second
place with a nervy two-wicket win
over Northampton Exiles. Ian
Hibbeard took his second five-wick-
et haul in four matches, giving away
just 23 runs, to help dismiss
Northampton for a modest 131.
Hibbeard was ably supported by
skipper Simon Hibbert, who
chipped in with 3-32, including two
stumpings for wicketkeeper Jimmy
Hassle.
County Hall looked to be coasting
to victory with Andrew Szemiako
scoring 56, but they suffered a bat-
ting collapse, slumping from 101-3 to
114-7. However, Wayne Langton8217s
unbeaten 20 steadied the ship and
he steered his side home to 132-8.
The second XI picked up a two
wicket win over Cheshunt in divi-
sion eight with two overs to spare.
Michael Brown (4-43) pegged back
Cheshunt. However, poor fielding
and three missed run-outs let them
reach 130-7. Runs were hard to
come by in reply but Pankit Shah
(24) and Tom Barnaby (23) saw
them home at 132-8.
WATTON-AT-STONE
made it
back-to-back wins with a three-
wicket win over Chipperfield that
moved them up into seventh place.
Chipperfield reached a
respectable 191-7, but the visitors
were in strong batting form and
overhauled the target within 44
overs, also for the loss ofseven
wickets.
In division five, BAYFORD AND
HERTFORD
racked up a 134-run
victory at home over Northchurch
II with some slick bowling. The
hosts batted first with Ben Wilson
(32), James Hogg (33) and Andy
Blackett (38) helping Bayford to 184
all out.
Blackett would prove even more
devastating with the ball as he took
6-29 with Neil Morris chipping in
with 4-17 as Northchurch were bun-
dled over for a meagre 50 runs.
DATCHWORTH
picked up a
draw at Old Elizabethans. The visi-
tors batted first and notched 160 all
out off53 overs, Matt Budd (49) top
scoring. OE8217s kept the scoreboard
ticking over despite the best efforts
ofAlex Akers (4-32), but they held
on and reached 142-9 as the 47th and
final over came to a close.
WARE
were humbled at home to
Hitchin II as they lost by 146 runs in
division six. Hitchin batted first and
posted a total of204, with Gavin
Wren taking 4-47 and Stephen
Dinnes 3-54. In reply only Simon
Morgan (19) and Manish Prakash
(13) reached double figures as they
were all out for 58.
In division eight,
ALLENBURYS
slumped to their first defeat ofthe
season at Botany Bay II. Botany
reached 145 all out with Carl Kerr
taking 3-27. However, Allenburys
failed with the bat as the 19 extras
proved the highest total oftheir
innings as they stumbled to 64 all
out.Team in race
