evening leagueA CARP caught 10 minutes from the
end catapults Peter Green to the top of
the Abbey Cross Wednesday evening
league. This was held at the club8217s Nazeing lake
which is noted for carp, but Green8217s 9lb
11oz fish was surprisingly the only one to
oblige. And as this was the first ofonly
four matches it gives him a massive 40
point lead over all those who suffered
blanks.
Willy Ramthor is licking his wounds after
losing a big fish that raced out to the mid-
dle ofthe lake before parting company.q A NEW trout fishing club is proving so
popular that five vacancies remain out of
its complement of55 members.
Known as The Lady Hughes Syndicate,
they fish Panshanger Park, a 15-20 acre
lake just outside Hertford, which has
recently yielded rainbows and brown
trout to 4lb 8oz. For further details call
01992 581979.qTROUT fishing has been suspended at
Rib Lake, Ware, but is now open to coarse
fishing instead.
Fly fishing ceases every summer as soon
as the water temperature reaches 18186c,
then starts again at the end ofSeptember.
Meanwhile, carp anglers can fish the
'8217trout8217 lake all night ifthey wish. For
details call 01920 462200.q CHESHUNT8217S Roman Urn Angling
Club fished Rib8217s Millennium Lake on
Sunday, where the rising water tempera-
ture have seen a significant increase in
the numbers ofroach and bream coming
to hook.
Top rod with a quality haul ofroach
totalling 26lb 15oz 8dr was Rick Martinelli
who used mainly pole and maggot. But
runner-up Mick Neil used caster to com-
pile 21lb 2oz ofsilver fish, followed by
Mark Smith with 17lb 4oz.
Roman Urn fished Southend Farm8217s
Dillon8217s Lake last Saturday when Danny
Saggs made a 27lb 5oz winning catch of
carp. Alan Upson was second with 23lb
14oz, again carp on pole and pellet, but
luncheon meat helped Alan Hollingshead
secure third place on 19lb 13oz.q DAMSEL Lake yielded some impressive
catches when it was used for Saturday8217s
Open at Southend Farm, Waltham Abbey.
Mark Paris led the way with 63lb 12oz of
small carp, followed by Steve Page (38lb
2oz) from an adjacent swim. ANGLING BY REGHOLLINSDARTSGolf ace Sean8217s

at Wodson Day CampSEANWhiffin, the 37-year-old
who teaches at The Hertfordshire
GolfClub, Broxbourne, won the
Bishop8217s Stortford Masters but
admitted in his victory speech
that he had been fortunate. This first PGA East Region order
ofmerit event ofthe season went to
a sudden death play-offagainst
Jason Levermore ofClacton after
both players finished on seven
under par 135
The 380 yard 10th hole, by no
means the hardest on the course,
provided the setting for some dra-
matic twists and turns.
Whiffin hit his tee shot into long
grass on the right and was forced to
chip out. Levermore was in semi-
rough 130 yards from the pin. His
wedge pitched on the down slope
behind the green and the ball ended
unplayable in a hedge.
Whiffin completed a bogey five
while Levermore, this time with a
gap wedge, found the green with his
fourth shot but needed a 25-foot putt
to stay in the match. It proved too
much to ask.
Whiffin collected the first prize of
1631,515 and Levermore took home
1631,011.
Whiffin said: 8220I am planning to
play in the PGA East Region order
ofmerit events this season and
hope to win a place on the Srixon
PGA play-offs at the end ofthe sea-
son. I would love the chance to play
in the BMW PGA Championship at
Wentworth next year. I was fortu-
nate today but it was a good start to
the season.8221
Whiffin seemed to have the tour-
nament in the bag when he was 11
under par with four holes to play in
his second round. Then a double
bogey at the 174 yard par three 15th
brought uncertainty. His seven-iron
tee-shot flew offthe green and
ended deep in woodland.
He dropped further shots at the
16th and 18th which left the door
ajar for Levermore who birdied the
13th and 14th and eventually needed
to sink a 20 foot birdie putt on the
last to force the play-off.
Robert Leonard ofMid Herts
hung in for third place at five under
par. His belly putter served him well
with a tricky birdie putt at the short
eighth after he had missed an easier
birdie attempt at the previous hole.
Paul Curry, the former European
Tour and United States Tour player,
is back for his annual break from
Florida and shared fourth place
with Brett Taylor ofChelmsford.

Wodson Park for a new
basketball talent to send to a
training camp in the
America.
Since it began in 1989, the
venue8217s annual Basketball
Day Camp has sent 19
young players across the
Atlantic on an all-expenses-
paid trip to a prestigious
American venue, normally
Syracuse University, New
York to hone their skills.
Last summer8217s winner was
Ben Warden, who currently
plies his trade for Ware
Leopards Under-18s. The 6ft
2in guard has represented
East of England at under-15
and under-17 level, and is
hoping this experience will
be the springboard for a
scholarship in the US to
study electronic engineering.
Wodson Park Camp director
Roy Birch described Ben as
8220a real talent and a young
man who works extremely
hard.8221
As this year is the 20th time
the camp has been staged at
Wodson Park, it is hoped
that many of the previous
winners will gather for a
reunion on the event8217s final
day on August 1.
8220We8217ve had some terrific
players go through the camp
over the years,8221 said Birch.
8220Some have gone on to
great things. Dan Clark is
playing professionally in
Spain, Duncan Ogilvie is an
England international, Lloyd
Gardner and Jo Godfrey are
professional coaches and
Julia Colley looks as though
she8217s off to college in the
States.8221
There are still a few places
left on the 2008 Camp, which
begins on July 28, and
application forms are
available on
