6Village LifeTUESDAY
Lynn News, April 17, 2007WITH a combined population
ofmore than 6,500 and more
houses currently under
construction, the two parishes
ofNorth and South Wootton
face a continual struggle to
retain their rural heritage and
village image.
Indeed, the developments of
the last 20 years have blurred
the boundaries, both between
the two villages and nearby
Lynn.
But while the differences
between the villages may not
be apparent to the outsider,
there is still a strong core
identity, with each village
having its own village green,
parish council and village
hall.
Wootton Park, the large
area ofpublic space between
the two villages, is jointly
administered by the two
parish councils, providing
both a popular general
amenity as well as home for
The Woottons football club,
which has both adult and
junior teams.
West Norfolk Rugby Club
has three pitches and a squash
court at North Wootton, while
Lynn GolfClub has one ofthe
best courses at nearby Castle
Rising.
Scouting and Guiding is
very popular in the Woottons,
with the Scout and Guide
headquarters close to All
Saints8217 Church at North
Wootton.
The church in the Woottons
is a thriving part ofthe
community, both at at All
Saints Church at North
Wootton and St Mary8217s Church
South Wootton.

by its handsome castle, once one ofthemost important fortifications in East
Anglia.
But the pretty village nestling in its
leafy setting below the castle is also a
welcoming place for visitors, particularlyon a sunny day.
The scale ofthe castle is staggering, the
complex covering 12 acres offormidable
man-made earthworks, the huge 12th
century keep standing proudly in the
centre with its walls still towering to their
full original height.
And the remains ofthe great hall and
chamber show this was also a palatial
home, a place ofsplendour and pageantry
which played host to several kings of
England during a long and distinguished
history.Castle still an impressive structure above villageCastle Rising Castle makes a great setting for historical re-enactments every summer.Sandringham runs
