second order
to deal with
yobs in WareBIKERS are urged to get their
motorcycles checked over at a
BikeSafe event in Hertford on
Sunday.
The safety checks, which are run
by Herts police, will be carried
out at County Hall in Pegs Lane
from 9.30am to 3pm, and
motorcyclists will also have the
chance to go out for a one-hour
assessed ride with a roads
policing officer.
Sgt Malcolm Jackson, driving
school trainer and BikeSafe
assessor, said: 8220Motorcycles
account for less than one per
cent oftraffic, but are involved
in around 25 per cent ofall
collisions which result in death
or serious injury in Herts.
8220There are many measures that
bikers can take to minimise
risks and still enjoy the road.8221
The event is supported by Herts
County Council and Herts and
Beds Advanced Motorcyclists.q To book an assessed ride,
which is free ofcharge, call the

fuel prices in HertsPETROL prices in the
Mercury
patch are the most expensive in
Hertfordshire, according to a
price comparison website. The online price-tracking serv-
ice provided by www.petrol-
prices.com
showed this week that
the average cost ofa litre ofpetrol
in Hertford is 118.5p, while diesel
costs 131.1p.
Prices are even dearer in Ware,
where the average cost ofunlead-
ed is 119p and diesel 131.8p.
Motorists in Welwyn Garden
City pay on average 1.1p less for
every litre ofunleaded, and in St
Albans fuel is cheaper still 8211 the
average cost ofpetrol being just
116.5p.
Nationally, the average cost of
unleaded is 117.2p per litre and
130.5p or diesel, according to the
website.
Motorist Greame Lennox said
that recent steep price rises have
forced him to think more carefully
about where he fills up.
In fact, he has taken to stopping
offat stations as far afield as
Watford and St Albans rather than
pay through the nose closer to his
Hertingfordbury home.
8220I run four cars and up until
recently didn8217t pay much atten-
tion to what I was putting in
them,8221 he said.
8220But over the past few weeks
costs have risen so much that I
started noticing what I was paying
and I realise it was up to 5p more
in Hertford, which really adds
up.8221
He added: 8220There8217s no justifica-
tion for it.
8220It can8217t be costs ofdistribu-
tion, product or land 8211 because
these would be the same or higher
in somewhere like St Albans.
8220I can8217t think it would be any-
thing other than profiteering.
They do it because they can.8221
A spokeswoman for BP, which
runs the petrol station at Rush
Green, denied profiteering.
She said: 8220You should remem-
ber that 69p out ofevery litre goes
to the Government in tax. Less
than 1p is actually profit for the
company.8221
She added: 8220There is no simple
answer to how prices are set.
8220We [BP] don8217t have a national
pricing policy.
8220We are responsible for setting
the prices on just 280 ofour 1,200
garages nationwide.
8220The rest ofthe prices are set
by independent dealers who have
a number offactors to take into
account, including market condi-
tions, costs ofthe site and distri-
bution.8221By DANIELPHILLIPSphillipsd@hertsessexnews.co.ukA FURTHER six-month
dispersal order has been granted
in Ware, following the success of
one introduced to Amwell End.
The order for King George Road
came into force on Tuesday to
tackle anti-social behaviour and
nuisance youths in the area.

have been speaking with
residents in the area through
our street briefings and
concerns have been raised about
anti-social behaviour in the
area.
8220I am delighted this order has
been granted and I look forward
to seeing the positive effects in
the coming months.8221
East Herts councillor Malcolm
Alexander, executive member for
community safety and
protection, (Con, Ware Trinity)
who is also a Ware town
councillor, said: 8220Since the
dispersal order was introduced
in Amwell End, residents have
been satisfied with the results so
I8217m pleased that we8217re able to
work in partnership with the
police to introduce a similar
order in King George Road.8221
The order will give powers to
police officers and police
community support officers
allowing them to disperse
groups oftwo or more persons
