Village LifeTUESDAY
Lynn News, April 17, 20075
Website: www.lynnnews.co.ukDERSINGHAM is both well-located and
well-connected, being close to both pretty
woodland and Royal Sandringham 8212 and
also handily-placed on the coast road too.
Just for good measure, it has a bypass
to take away the through traffic, freeing
up the village centre for visitors to
appreciate.
Being so close to the royal estate at
Sandringham, Dersingham benefits from
the many visitors who come to see the
royal family at Christmas time, as well as
visitors to Sandringham House and
Country Park during the rest ofthe year.
Even without the royal influence,
Dersingham has a lot going for it, having
an enviable range ofshops and facilities.
A thriving village centre has developed,
with a range ofstores and services more
akin to a small town.
And while there have been many
newcomers in recent years as housing
developments have sprung up in and
around Dersingham, there has always
been a well-established community with
local organisations.
Even a hundred years ago, Dersingham
had a population ofmore than 1,000, and
the influx ofrecent years has seen the
figure approach 5,000 today. Back in 1880
the village had a post office, grocery
stores, shoe repairer and florist. Today,
facilities would do credit to a small town.
The railway no longer passes through
the village, a victim ofthe closures in the
1960s, but the community has simply
moved on and continued to expand as the
need for more houses, both for locals, for
people retiring and for those seeking
holiday homes, has grown.
THERE are a number of events taking
place at St Nicholas Church,
Dersingham, throughout the year.
Coffee mornings are held in the
church hall on the first Friday of each
month, with craft stalls, nearly new
clothes, second-hand books, fresh
produce from local allotments, and
home-made cakes and savouries.
A St George8217s Day Lunch will be
held in the church hall on April 22, and
a Mammoth Auction Sale will be held
in the same venue on April 28.
Then on May 27 and 28, Dersingham
villagers open their gardens to the
public, with refreshments in the
church hall.
St Nicholas Church Flower Festival
will take place from July 19-22, with
more than 60 displays in the church
and craft stalls and refreshments in
the church hall.
A Children8217s Holiday Club takes
place in the church hall on August 6, 7
and 8.
The Autumn Arts and Crafts Festival
will be held on September 27, 28 and
29. Local artists will be displaying their
paintings in the church with various
local displays of lace-making etc, and
a photographic competition. There will
be lots of craft stalls in the church
hall, with refreshments.
Harvest Lunch will be in the church
hall on October 14.
The Christmas Tree Festival, on
November 30 and December 1 and 2,
will feature a church full of Christmas
trees decorated by local groups and
societies.Still busy today 8212and
