57PAUSING in the glade,the
oaks towering above us look
as if they have been standing
sentinel in the Essex countryside
for centuries.
But,acknowledges Hugh Johnson
during our walk through the
woodland,he has planted each of
the trees which surround us.
8220It started as an arboretum but
now I am told it is more of a
woodland,8221 says Hugh,who with
his wife Judy,has created
traditional English country gardens
around the 17th century manor
house that is their home.
He is able to now appreciate
trees such as the magnificent 50ft
oak because he started pursuing
his passion of planting trees 37
years ago when the couple moved
into Saling Hall.
His achievement in designing and
planting the garden is all the more
remarkable because much of his
time has also been spent away
from home,travelling for his
demanding career as writer and
editor.He is perhaps best known
for his books on wine and in 2007
he was awarded an OBE for
services to winemaking and
horticulture.
Garden lovers have been able to
follow his progress in establishing
the gardens of Saling Hall before
they even step through the arched
door through the walled garden
leading into its grounds.LEgardensPlanting passionJane Williams
