BRING out the sherry when
looking for a light and
refreshing drink for enjoying al
fresco.
Harvey8217s Fino is a very dry
sherry which is ideal to pack
in the hamper for picnics such as days at
the races or outdoor concerts.
It is the perfect partner for shellfish
and seafood,hard tangy cheeses,salty
salami and smoked salmon, clean to the
taste with a subtle aroma.
Pale straw in colour,Harvey8217s Fino
derives from Palomino grapes from sun-
soaked vineyards of Jerez de la
Frontera near the south-west coast of
Spain.
And to match the revival in image of
this sherry,it comes in a sleek bottle
with art deco label. It is available in
Morrisons and Majestic at 1638.18.9632

51Wine of the monthMY word is my bond 8211
in the wine trade,
gentleman8217s
agreements have always been
par for the course,but 30
years ago,one man in our
business had to back up his
word with real action.
That man was Peter
Lehmann,then head
winemaker at Saltram
Wines,in the Barossa
Valley,South Australia.
Many wine companies
don8217t grow all their own
grapes,but buy them in
from contract farmers.In
1977,Saltram told Peter
that he would have to cut
back on the grapes he
bought (there was a glut
of grapes at the time 8211
bizarre as it may seem
now,shiraz grapes from
fantastic vines were being
used to make muffins!)
However,Peter had
given his word.If he
reneged on the deal,the
contract growers would
go bust 8211 what was he to
do? In a desperate
economic climate he
founded Masterson Barossa
Vineyards (named after the
legendary gambler Sky
Masterson of Guys and Dolls
fame) and bought all the
grapes.The contract growers
were saved and the rest is
history.
Masterson Barossa Vineyards
was re-named Peter Lehmann
Wines in 1982,went from
strength to strength,and was
valued at $103 million in 2003.
The range of wines is huge,to
suit all pockets.Top of the tree
is Stonewell Shiraz (about
16330,Waitrose &
Oddbins),an immense
wine,but pleasure can be
had at a more affordable
price.
The Barossa Semillon
(1636 8211 1637,widely available)
is a fresh,fruity example,
with bags of lemon zest
and grapefruit.
The Barossa Tempranillo
(1638.99,Waitrose) is a
fantastic take on this
Spanish grape,with full
red cherry and redcurrant
fruit 8211 it8217s just crying out
for a lamb chop from the
barbie!
Both wines carry the
Queen of Clubs logo
which is known as the
gambler8217s card 8211 referring
to the great gamble back
in 1977.
Peter Lehmann still
enjoys close relationships with
all his growers,meeting them
for a chat as they bring in their
grapes at vintage time.
