4Village LifeTUESDAY
Lynn News, April 17, 2007THERE are very much two
halves to the village of
Snettisham 8212 but the good
news is they are both very
interesting and well worth
exploring.
The main village centre,
adjoining the A49 bypass,
contains most ofthe shops
and facilities for everyday life,
while the area on the coastal
strip is hugely popular with
both holiday visitors, anglers,
walkers and birdwatchers.
The square in the centre of
the village has retained the
charm and character of
yesteryear, despite the
increase in activity ofrecent
times as Snettisham has
become a popular holiday
destination and a magnet for
local home-seekers.
There are also financial
services based in the village,
saving you having to make a
journey into the nearest town.
Majestic against the skyline,
the 175 ft spire ofSt Mary8217s
Church is visible for miles and
provides a striking backdrop
for the village green.
Snettisham Park, with its
famous red deer herd and host
offamily attractions, ensures
a steady flow ofvisitors
through the village centre all
year round, while the gently
shelving sand and shingle
beach and bird reserves at the
coastal park also draw their
regulars, whatever the season.
At Snettisham RSPB
Reserve, you can see many
thousands ofwading birds
and ducks, nesting gulls and
terns, and up to 40,000 pink-
footed geese.FOLLOWING last year8217s very successful and
popular event, SNETTFEST, now an annual
two-day music festival and craft fair, will take
place on Saturday and Sunday, August 11-12,
in the village of Snettisham.
The focus is on providing family friendly
entertainment, with local live bands
presenting a variety of music from jazz to
rock and pop. There will also be attractions
for children and various craft stalls, along
with food and drink stalls.
Located on the large Park field, opposite
the Original Factory Shop, SNETTFEST 07
will start mid afternoon to late evening each
day. Day tickets are 1635, with free admission
for accompanied children aged 12 years and
under. Park field is situated on a main busTHE great Iron Age hoards found at
Snettisham form the richest Iron Age
treasure ever discovered in this country.
There have been several finds over the
years since the first discovery by afarmworker ploughing a field in 1948.
This was followed by finds in the 1950s,
60s and 70s, culminating in the
excavations in 1989 which unearthed the
richest treasure ofall 8212 two bronze
bracelets, two silver torques and finally
ten gold torques (a torque being an ornate
decoration worn around the neck).
Work by the Norfolk Archaeological
Unit in Snettisham in 1991 revealed
widespread remains datable to the Roman
period, including field boundary ditches,
a road, chalk path and two pottery kilns.
Nearer the present day, the railways
came to Snettisham in the 19th century,
but, sadly, the Lynn to Hunstanton line
closed in the 1960s.
A relic from those days, Snettisham8217s
former railway signal box, has recently
been moved after 40 years.
It was taken to Hardingham Station,
near Wymondham, on the Mid-Norfolk
Railway, for restoration. The magnificent spire of St Mary8217s Church.Snettisham has many interesting corners.route with ample car
parking and toilet
facilities available.
