I8217ve been here threeyears and I can honestly say that no twodays have ever been the same. That8217swhat makes it such an interesting job.Thanks to the rotations programme, each student gains experience in severaldifferent areas of actuarial work.What made you choose HBOS?HBOS is a large company that has a greatdeal of experience, a good reputation and really looks after its employees. It8217s a friendly environment in which people are always willing to provide support andadvice. Another advantage is the largenumber of students that work here. It8217scommon for a group of students to bestudying for the same exams and there areplenty of activities on the social calendar.Tell us something we don8217t know about actuarialwork at HBOS?You can gain responsibility really quickly.Actuarial work integrates with many other areas of the business and it hasbeen very rewarding to be givenresponsibility early on in my career.Describe your current working environment? It is both challenging and exciting. In2007, we moved into a brand new officeat Harbourside, near the city centre,which has bought the whole financecommunity closer together. As well ashaving a line manager, students areassigned a mentor who providesindividual support for the studyprogramme and exams. HBOS offers theideal environment for career success. Greg Bates is based in Leeds.He joined us in 2002 and he isnow a Pricing Manager withinGeneral Insurance.Tell us a little bit about your career progression?I joined as a Pricing Analyst in 2002 andalmost immediately started my actuarialstudies. I also gained plenty of hands-onexperience and was exposed to a widerange of challenging work. Studying whileI work has played a vital part in mydevelopment. My progress has beenrecognised and as a result I have beenpromoted twice in the last four years.What do you enjoy the most about your job?Being able to explain something that is highly technical in a simple way. Forexample, explaining a model to the team or presenting concepts to seniormanagement. I also appreciate workingwith such a great bunch of people.What surprised you about actuarial workat HBOS?The thing that surprised me the mostwas how many areas of the business ourwork affects. I get to interact with a widerange of colleagues and the team alwaysfeel very involved in what8217s happeningwithin the business as a whole.
