Clearly the best place to really test your car is on a track, but the south east's sprawling
countryside has some great roads for touring. Here are some of our favourite cars on the market
for pure driving pleasure - you may not be able to take the kids with you, or even much luggage,
but wherever you're going you'll arrive with a smile and the knowledge it was money well spent.
Porsche Boxster
33,375
Finely balanced and with a beautifully
honed chassis, the Boxster has never grown
into its awkward looks. You'll forgive it that
though, because its mid-engined layout and
the flat-six Porsche powerhouse make it one
of the most grin-inducing cars on sale.
Mazda MX-5
15,750
Taking inspiration from the 1960's Lotus
Elan, this cheap and cheerful contender
mixes strong engines with decent
performance, fine rear-wheel-drive
handling and bulletproof Japanese
reliability. A great all-rounder.
Caterham Seven
15,495
Motoring doesn't get much more
extreme than this. Literally an engine,
gearbox and four wheels, the Caterham
Seven is a raw driving experience which
utilises minimal weight and small,
punchy engines for breathtaking pace.
Our choice
Lotus Elise 23,550
Lotus needed this car to be a success.
It was launched at a time when the
company was still producing ageing cars
which the competition had long since
superceded. Then the Elise came bowling
out of the stables.
Equipped like a prison cell, it weighed
less than your average family pet and this
meant that you could throw it into corners
like a madman and still come out the
other side, grinning like one.
Going back to the Lotus ethos of
making small, light cars, the Elise was
everything we wanted. Its razor-sharp
handling, lightweight fibreglass body and
mini-supercar looks make it one of the
finest drivers' cars on the market, and for
this it's our favourite.
