fashionGamesCLOTHING collections inspired by
a series of words and made from
chiffon, silk and velvet were on
the catwalk at Hertford Regional
College8217s fashion show.
Second-year students studying the
BTEC National Diploma in fashion
and clothing at the college8217s Ware
campus invited the Mercuryto
take a look at their fantastic
creations last Thursday.
The student8217s collections were
inspired by words given to them
by their tutors. The list included
vintage, provocative, bold,
geometric and urban and each
student found a unique way of
expressing them.
Course leader Adele Zanre said:
8220The standard of clothing this year
has been very high. The students
used lots of different textures and
technique to create some fantastic
pieces.8221

portraits of her family and friends
at the town8217s Courtyard Arts
gallery.
Annie Tappenden, 63, of West
Street,
pictured, who has created
images using oil crayons, pen and
ink, calls her work Fifteen
Minutes of Fame.
She said: 8220I like the title. You8217re
on the wall and you8217ve got your
piece of fame in a portrait for 15
minutes 8211 or a week. It8217s a
celebration of friendship.8221

Xbox 360/PS3 16349.99,
PC16334.99, DS 16329.99,
out nowUnlike most racing games,
Codemasters8217
Race Driver
series makes the driver,
rather than the cars, the
star of the show. In the
excellent GRID, you8217ll
travel across Europe, Japan and the US
building your reputation as you master an
assortment of racing styles. You can
freelance for other teams, form your own
and negotiate sponsorship deals.
Essentially an arcade racer, GRID
nevertheless offers intelligent AIopponents
and realistic damage modelling. Head-on
smashes can knock you out the game but
GRID offers a unique flashback feature that
allows you to rewind time and try the section
you fouled up again.
There8217s a fantastic career mode called GRID
World and a wealth of multiplayer options,
allowing up to 12 to race. There is no team-
based racing online or offline split-screen
option but overall this is a superb game, with
impressive graphics, which balances arcade
action with serious racing.

360/Wii 16329.99, PS2/DS
16319.99, out nowBack in the distant past,
someone thought up the
idea of combining a racing
game with the deeply-
satisfying ability to plough
through scenery and for
that they should be awarded a gaming
excellence medal. Monster Jam
follows a
similar principle of racing mayhem.
Putting you behind the wheel of a monster
truck, it is split into three parts:single event,
championship 8211 a combination of outdoor
and stadium events 8211 and multi-player,
which consists of a local split-screen option.
MonsterPoints are awarded for stunts and
your total unlocks other trucks 8211 a good idea
in principle but sadly each truck handles
much the same as another. Oddly, your truck
can also be flipped over by tiny cars.
One to rent rather than buy, perhaps.

16349.99, out nowThis much-anticipated first-person shooter is
a game of two halves. In the first part of
Ubisoft8217s PS3 exclusive, you control a
Mantel Corps trooper who doses himself up
on a chemical called Nectar to become
quicker, stronger and blind to the horrors of
war.
Then, having recognised that all is not well
among his gung-ho colleagues, your
character switches allegiance to the rebels
and learns more about Mantel8217s motives.
It8217s a clever story, told in lengthy but largely
engaging cut-scenes. The dynamic adds
much to the game, which features
accomplished shoot-outs, polished
presentation and plenty of multi-player
options. Up to four can drop in and out of
the campaign, while the gripping online
modes add much to
Haze8217s longevity.
It8217s not perfect 8211 the in-game compass is
unhelpful and the weapons and vehicles are
familiar, but this is a confident and
enjoyable shooter for PS3 owners.
