LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY43GARDENSapple and pear trees; as well as younger
walnuts and quince.
Rudi says: 8220In this area, we are
including native plants that will also
bring insects to the garden. We are using
a range of wildflowers, as well as plants
with informal habits. These include
geranium, foxgloves, cowslips, lupins,
snake8217s head fritillaries, and buddleia.8221
Venturing from the Old Orchard
through the iron gate, a different style of
garden opens up before us. Directly
ahead is an avenue of apple trees grown
as freestanding espaliers 8211 there8217s a range
of varieties with the older trees being
Sedgwick plantings that are mostly
Bramleys. To the right, on the south-
facing wall, are espaliered pear trees.
To the left, dominating the north-east
corner of this huge walled area are the
plantings which are now known as Lady
Molly8217s garden. It was created by Lady
Wyldbore-Smith in the twentieth century
as one of her final projects. The garden
offers colour throughout the seasons with
patches of tulips, daffodils, alliums and
oriental lilies. Weigela, Californian lilac,
buddleia, clematis, camellias, rugosa roses
and hydrangeas form bigger blocks of
colour. The Persian Ironwood, Parrotia
persica, and various blossom trees ensure
a plentiful supply of colour and height.
Rudi says: 8220The larger western area of
the walled garden is being re-established
as an informal potager to provide
vegetables and flowers for the house.
Here will be grown a mixture of
vegetables including tomatoes, all types
of beans, peas, cabbage, onions, spinach,
squash, potatoes, beetroot, asparagus and
leeks; as well as a variety of salad
vegetables in the summer months.8221
Walking through the central iron gate
and under the magnificent climbing
Trumpet Creeper, Campsis radicans, with
its magnificent canopy of orange flowers
in late summer, we find ourselves in a
secluded garden room featuring its very
own swimming pool in the centre and
surrounded on all sides by walls. One
side is bedded out with colourful summer
plants. The other two borders are mixed
herbaceous sub-tropical plants and
shrubs.
The public rooms of Grantham House, along with its gardens, are open
to the public on the first Sunday of each month from April to
November; every Wednesday in June; each Wednesday and Thursday in
August; and to groups, at other times, by arrangement.
Events planned for this year include a Summer Evening Dinner Party on
27th June in aid of GIFTS Hospice; a Special Opening on the weekend of
12th and 13th July; a Flower Festival in mid-August; and a Summer
