Tulip Tree, Liriodendron tulipifera,
standing alongside an acacia.
Down a small flight of steps and at the
far end of the path, we come to the
rockery and pool garden. As Rudi
explains, 8220The main part of the garden is
matured now, but the pool and its
immediate surrounding area were
repaired and refurbished in 2001. We are
now establishing some new marginal
plants and aquatic wildlife.8221
Through the little gate is the
greenhouse, which was recently
refurbished with much of the original
Victorian cast iron fittings being re-used.
Many plants for the garden and house
are nurtured here including bedding
annuals, vegetables, orchids and other
house plants.
Opposite the greenhouse is a fine
example of Actinidia kolomikta with its
vibrant green and white leaves maturing
to darker green and magenta pink by
late spring. Progressing on down the
straight path from the greenhouse we
pass through the large dahlia bed which
is alive throughout summer with every
size and colour of flower imaginable. A
long border to the left is used almost
exclusively for the growing of cut
flowers and, as we walk beneath the
canopy of a mature Foxglove Tree,
Paulownia fortunei, masses of purple
trumpet flowers take your breath away.
Continuing past a tennis court, we
enter the old orchard. A magnificent
Indian Bean Tree, Catalpa bignonioides,
stands to the right and ahead is the river
bank with Sedgwick Meadows stretching
away beyond. The area has always been
an orchard and still sports some old43
