Mac
should
be
made
from
rubberised

rubber
laminated
material.

the

istence
still
comes
as
a
bit
of
a
surprise
to
some.

brand
has
come
a
long
way
since
Glas-
gow
chemist
Charles
Macintosh

without
the

patented
his
invention
for
waterproof
cloth
in
1823.
He
developed
the
process
of
spreading
rubber
onto
cotton
to
create
the
world8217s
first
waterproof
8211
and
then
went
on
to
create
the
orig-
inal
Mackintosh
coat.
In
1830
the
company
mer
ged
with
another
clothing
company
,
Thomas
Hancock,
which
had
also
been
ex
perimenting
with
rubber
coated
fabrics
for
over
20
years.
Early
coats
had
problems
with
smell,
stiff-
ness,
and
a
tendency
to
melt
in
hot
weather
,
but
Hancock
solved
many
of
them
with
his
unique
rubber
-vulcanising
method
in
1843.
Throughout
the
19th
and
20th
centuries,
the
Mackintosh
firm
continued
to
quietly
mak
e
waterproof
clothing.
Now
,
its
Cumbernauld
fac-
tory
produces
designs
in
collaboration
with
leading
fashion
houses
such
as
Gucci,
Herm233s,
Louis
Vu
itton
and
Liberty
,
and
every
