to supermarketASDAplans new store in WareCAUSING A FLAP: The swan family gather in Bull Plain(s)Visitors swan aroundMOTORISTS in Hertford had to
beak-careful as a young family
swanned into town on
Saturday morning.
Mum, dad and seven cygnets
formed a hungry herd on
Oddfellows Court and Bull
Plain at around 9am.
Feathers were ruffled as the
bevy8217s antics stopped traffic
and drew a crowd of
onlookers.
After around 20 minutes, the
bystanders managed to tempt
them back into the River Lee
with a trail of breadcrumbs.
Ian Peacock, 45, got in a flap
as he helped shoo the swans
to safety.
The Hertford-based
broadcaster said: 8220I8217ve done
some odd animal stories in my
time, such as the piglet which
ran amok during a cathedral
animal service, but this was
incredible.
8220They didn8217t care about the
traffic and were quite happy
just sitting there as if they8217d
gone on an outing.
8220The parents hissed a bit. One
almost pecked my bottom and
the smallest cygnet kept
tipping over upside down
during the chase.
8220But we got them back into the
river in the end and they didn8217t
even get a parking ticket.8221include: q35,000 sq ft ASDA with a multi-story
car park;qrestoration ofthe historic Kiln
Building 8211 a former maltings built
using Hatch brick 8211 and converted into
a modern office block;qa care home, although the developer
is still in discussions with a care com-
pany about running the site; and, qnegotiating a lease with the chil-
dren8217s nursery on the site to secure its
future.
The redevelopment would regener-
ate 8220an under-used and unattractive8221
brownfield site, according to
Goodwood.
It said its plans will secure and pro-
vide up to 530 long-term jobs on the site
and provide a 8220high quality retail store
to keep local people shopping in Ware8221.
Representatives from both
Goodwood and ASDA will be holding a
three-day exhibition next week to
explain details ofthe proposals and to
gauge public reaction to them.
Tom McGarry, a spokesman for
ASDA, said: 8220Our stores are part ofthe
communities they serve.
8220The only way that this can happen
is ifwe listen to their views as part of
the process ofdeveloping the plans.
8220Exhibitions are a great way for peo-
ple to learn more and for discussions
to take place.
8220Representatives from ASDA will be
at the exhibition alongside
Goodwood8217s planners, surveyors and
transport experts so that we can
answer questions that the community
may have.8221
Exhibition times: Thursday (June
19) at Cintel House between 10.30am
and 5.30pm; Friday at Ware Priory
between 10.30am and 5.30pm; and,
Saturday at the Priory from 9.30am to
1.30pm.Continued:
from front pageTHE prospect ofASDA coming to
Ware has provoked a 8220cautious but
optimistic8221 response from many
in the town.Marina Jordani, ofclothes shop
Millionaire, welcomed the prospect
ofmore shoppers coming to Ware.
She said: 8220I don8217t think we will be
threatened by it 8211 we really offer a
different range ofstock.
8220Anything that can improve the
number ofshoppers coming into the
town can only be a good thing.8221
Former mayor Cllr George Powell
(Con, Christchurch) said: 8220I have an
open mind. Speaking generally,
another supermarket anywhere in
Ware would provide a little bit of
competition for Tesco [in West
Street].
8220I firmly believe that competition
is beneficial to the average punters
in Ware.
8220Also, any development anywhere
would have to provide sufficient
parking arrangements.
8220But I haven8217t seen the plans yet
so cannot really form an opinion.8221
The history ofthe industrial
Cintel site is controversial, with pre-
vious plans proving unpopular with
many residents. A plan to build 172
homes was withdrawn in December
2006.
Hertford and Stortford8217s Tory MP
Mark Prisk even stepped in at one
stage to discuss concerns with resi-
dents.
Developers previously tried to
demolish the current industrial
buildings, replacing them with resi-
dential properties.
JeffHawkins, ofthe Park Road
and Fanshawe Crescent Residents8217
Committee, which opposed previous
plans, said he was 8220cautiously opti-
mistic8221.
8220They have been speaking to us.
They have told us that they are going
to keep it low rise,8221 he said yester-
day.
8220The fear was with the plans
before that it would be a five- or six-
storey block offlats and we are
pleased that the want to preserve the
Kiln Building because it is an attrac-
tive building.
8220It is a brownfield site and we
always knew that something was
going to be built there 8211 we just did-
n8217t like what they had planned.
8220At the end ofthe day it8217s either
that or we have got an ugly block of
flats. At this stage it looks positive
but we8217ve not actually seen any
plans.
8220Traffic is a major concern
though. The roads around here are
very, very busy 8211 there8217s
GlaxoSmithKline and the schools
here already.8221

ing to discuss the plans with
