34MMERCURY June 13, 2008
email: mercury@hertsessexnews.co.ukAS one of Broxbourne
borough8217s favourite sons
puts down his bass guitar
after a career spanning
almost 50 years, former Kink John
Dalton looks back on his life as a
bona fide rock star.A recent swansong show with the
Kast Off Kinks 8211 the band that
reunited John with other former
members 8211 at Broxbourne Civic Hall
brought to an end a career that began
just down the road in Cheshunt 49
years earlier.
However, his story begins even before
taking to the stage.
8220My claim to fame is that I went to
school with Cliff Richard,8221 John said,
revealing that the ageing crooner,
three years John8217s senior, was his
prefect at Cheshunt Secondary
Modern School. Fame came a lot
sooner for Cliff, however.
After enjoying local success with
Danny King and The Bluejacks, and
playing alongside The Who with Mark
Four, John gave up on a music career.
8220I thought we weren8217t going anywhere
so I stopped playing,8221 he said.
However, hewas approached by a
former roadie to auditionfor the
Kinks, to stand in for an injured Pete
Quaife in 1966.
8220I didn8217t want to do it at first, but he
persuaded me. I thought, 8216It8217s the
chance of a lifetime, you8217ve got
nothing to lose8217.8221
John related his first meeting with the
band: 8220There was Mick (Avory)
tapping away, Dave (Davies) was lying
flat on the floor, Ray (Davies) came in
with a couple of singles he was
supposed to review and threw them
out of a window 8211 it was all a bit
frightening.8221
8220They said, 8216What are you doing this
afternoon?8217and we went straight to
the studio to play
Top of the Pops
!8221
After contributing bass to hit track
Dead End Street,
John returned as a
permanent member in 1969 when
Quaife quit the band. He stayed with
them for the next seven years.
8220The Kinks played their best live
music in the early 821770s. You8217ve got to
work, and we toured 12 weeks, three
times a year. When you8217re not touring
you8217re recording 8211 we recorded four
or five albums a year.8221
Seminal Kinks tracks recorded in that
time include Victoria, Shangri-La
and
the evergreen
Lola.
In 1992, the Kast Off Kinks reunited
John with two other ex-Kinks, original
drummer Mick Avory and keyboardist
John Gosling, plus Dave Clarke on
vocals.
8220We8217ve always been friends, and it all
started off at the Civic Hall when we
had an offer from the Kinks fan club
16 years ago. They asked us, so we
got together.8221
The band played conventions and
charity shows to raise funds for the
Leukaemia Research Fund, after the
disease claimed the life of John8217s third
son Matthew at the age of six.
However, John ended his professional
career with abash at his home, which
sawRay Davies drop by.
8220The idea was to get as many of the
musicians I have played with and
perform a little set with each band
through my years.8221
And his highlight of the last 49 years?
8220My grandson Declan, I absolutely
love him to bits 8211 he8217s greatest thing
that8217s happened to me.8221Watch

Audiences will be enticed, enthralled and
entertained by a contemporary dance take
on William Shakespeare8217s
A Midsummer
Night8217s Dream.
Following the theatre performance, there
will be live music to dance to.Ware Choral Society chose to
celebrate the coming of
summer with an evening
devoted to Mozart, with two lesser-
known pieces for chorus and
orchestra and one other (see later).
With the Southern Pro Arte orchestra,
four soloists, a hundred-strong chorus
and conductor Julian Williamson fully
in command, we ignored the rain.
In six movements, Solemn Vespers of
a Confessor
(K339) is a rather
forbidding-sounding title. But from
the first exuberant bars of the Dixit
Dominus
we expected and got a fine
evening of music making. It is one of
the brightest of Mozart8217s Salzburg
choral works and includes one of his
most spectacular and beautiful
soprano 8220concert8221 arias, sung here by
Mary Nelson. And 8211 as in the best of
opera finales, when everything begins
to converge with brilliant unisons for
orchestra and chorus combined at the
8220Amen8221 of the Magnificat 8211 this work
comes to a splendidly life-affirming
end.
On the other hand, seldom does a
week go by without bits of the
Serenade for Strings No 13
turning up
between the commercials on Classic
FM. Under its more-recognised title,
Eine Kleine Nacht Musik
(K525), the
strings of the Southern Pro Arte
performed a small miracle by making
it sound so fresh, as well as
approachable. The orchestra have
been playing with the society since
the early 1990s and has obviously
developed a good working
relationship over the years.
The
C minor Mass
, which followed
the interval, is written on a grand
scale. The orchestral forces are nearly
the largest Mozart employed in his
sacred music and it contains some of
the most compelling music he ever
wrote.
The chorus really came into its own
in the 8220Gloria8221, clearly following the
score instruction, 8220allegro vivace!8221
The two sopranos, Mary Nelson and
Natasha Jouhl, made an interesting
contrast 8211 crystal and chocolate 8211 in
this piece, especially in the 8220Domine
Deus8221. The two other excellent
soloists, Mark Wilde (tenor) and
Edward Caswell (bass) had less to do
throughout the evening but with the
final 8220Benedictus8221, they, the choir, the
orchestra and the organ (Nicholas
Houghton) came together to a moving
and magnificent conclusion. Leonard RogersReview An Evening of Mozart,Annual Summer Concert,
