Shine
On
is
a
fantastic
song.
The
way
the
guitars
kick
in
during
the
chorus,
the
way
the
bass
moves
to
the
forefront
during
the
verses,
I8217m
even
prepared
to
let
them
get
aw
ay
with
the
guitar
solo
in
the
middle,
but
it8217
s
the
way
the
song
lingers
on
at
the
ver
y
end
tha
t
tha
t
works
for
me.
Ho

from
there
and

huge

one
of
life8217

Shine
On
shares
with
the
House
Of
Love8217
s
Shine
On
is
the
name,
because
this
really
is
quite
unexciting.
Even
the

sounds
a
bit
half-hearted.
It8217
s
all
ver

jingly-jangly
and
awfully
radio-
friendly
,b
ut
to
me
it
sounds
like
an
album
filler
track
that
accidentally
got
released
as
a
single.
Never
mind,
I8217m
sure
there8217
s
better
stuff
on
the
album
...
isn8217t
there?
It8217
s
not
often
I
tell
you
a
bit
about
myself,
so
make
the
most
of
it.
Do
you
remember
Urban
Hymns?
Of
course
you
do,
it
was
filled
to
the
brim
with
cl
assic
singles
like
Bitter
Sweet
Symphon
y,
The
Drugs
Don8217t
Wo
rk
and,
er
,a
ll
those
other
cl
assic
songs.
I
kno
w
I
certainly
remember
Urban
Hymns,
because
way
back
in
1997
when
it
came
out
I
was
working
in
a
record
shop.
Yo
u
might
have
heard
of
it,
remember
Sam
Goody?
We
ll,
it
was-
n8217t
tha
t
one.
In
those
days,
working
in
that
record
shop
was
brilliant,
partly
because
the
staff
could
choose
the
music
tha
t
blared
out
through
the
speakers.
An
yway
,t
ha
t
year
there
were
four
albums
tha
t
were
practically
welded
to
the
CD

(no,

and
the
Ve

s
Urban
Hymns.
No
w,
track
one
(Bitter
Sweet
Symphon
y)
is
a
great
song.
I
had
no
problem
with
track
one.
Unfortuna
tely
,
after
tha
t
it
was
something
of
a
descent
into
miser
y
and
tedium
that
only
really
came
back
to
life
at
the
end
with
Come
On
(and
Richard
Ashcroft
yelling
four
-letter
words
for
the
enter
-
tainment
of
all
the
customers).
Of
course,
they
split
up
soon
after
and
tha
t
was
the
end
of
that.
Thing
is,
you
can8217t
keep
a
good
band
do
wn
and
so
the
Ve
rv
e
ha
ve
reformed,
but
this
isn8217t
the
Ve
rv
e
I
remember
.
I
kno
w
this
because
at
no
point
dur
-
ing
the
song
did
I
feel
like
screaming
8216F
or
God8217
s
sake,
cheer
up
Ashcroft8217
at
the
speakers.
This
is
actually
a
fairly
joyous
little
number
,n
ot
least
down
to
the
whoops
and
hollers
in
the
foreground.
It
sounds
to
me
like
the
band
did
the
backing
vocals,
but
the
producer
told
them
to
make
it
just
a
little
more
forceful,
so
they
re-recorded
it
thinking
8216let8217
s
go
completely
over
the
top
for
a
laugh8217,
and
to
their
shock,
surprise
and
horror
the
producer
informed
them
that
tha
t
was
exactly
what
he
was
looking
for
thank
you
ver
y
much.
The
thing
is,
it8217
s
all
over
the
song
and
it
drives
things
along
but
it
works.
By
rights
this
should
shoot
the
Ve
rv
e8217
s
credibilty
to
Hell,
but
they8217ve
got
away
with
it.
If
you
ask
me,
this
is
the
best
Ve
rv
e
single
in
at
least
a
decade,
and
possibly
their
second
best
ever
