Lynn News, April 17, 2007WITH SO many natural attractions close
by on the coast and in the countryside 8212
plus its own handsome setting, it8217s little
wonder that Burnham Market is so
popular.
The heart ofBurnham Market, around
the picturesque village green, has,
fortunately, remained comparatively
unspoiled by modern pressures.
And despite an increasing number of
city dwellers taking second homes in the
area, Burnham Market has a well-
established and vibrant local community.
The nearby Norfolk coast in an area of
outstanding natural beauty. Whether you
are looking for great walks, bird-
watching, sailing or just to relax over a
meal, you are fully catered for here.
The Burnhams are renowned for their
connections with Admiral Lord Nelson,
England8217s sea hero who was born at
Burnham Thorpe, and there were plenty
ofevents locally in 2005, the bicentenary
ofhis death at the Battle ofTrafalgar.
The website ofthe local pub at
Burnham Thorpe, The Lord Nelson, has
information on the famous man. Log on

THERE are plenty of major events to
look forward to in the Burnhams over
the summer months.
The 102nd Burnhams Flower Show
and Carnival will be held at Burnham
Market on Saturday, July 14th.
A really big event that is always
eagerly anticipated in Burnham Market
is the annual craft fair, which this year
will be taking place on Saturday, August
18th.
Later in the month, on Wednesday,
August 22nd, there is Music on the
Meadow at Sussex Farm, while on
Saturday and Sunday, September 15th-
16th, there will be British Eventing
Horse Trials at Sussex Farm.DOCKING is near to both
the popular coast and the
property hot-spot of
Burnham Market, both
factors that have increased
its desirability in recentA VILLAGE church which has been silent for eight years
should be ringing out with a full set of bells in the autumn.
A 16320,000 Heritage Lottery Fund grant, coupled with
around 16321,000 raised in seven months by 700 villagers of
East Rudham, means six bells should be ringing when the
major project is complete.
The church has never had six bells in its entire history,
and the three in place could not be rung.
But a massive effort by villagers and now the lottery cash
means not only a complete restoration programme, but the
purchase of three additional bells to create a peal.
It is hoped they will ring out for the first time in
September.times.
Certainly, the number ofnew
businesses that have sprung up in
Docking is testimony to its
increasingly high profile in North
Norfolk.
And there is much more to the
village, as you will discover when
you explore.
The centre ofthe village is a
conservation area, and with its
ponds, projects a most pleasing
rural scene.
In the early days ofthe last
century, Docking was a bustling,
self-sufficient community with
around a dozen shops and at least
15 inns and ale houses.
While the recent revival may not
be quite on this scale, it is a
welcome change for the better.
The village occupies one ofthe
higher points in Norfolk and at one
time was known as 8216Dry Docking8217
because ofwater supply problems.
Like many local villages,
Docking at one time had a railway
station, and it also had an airfield
that saw wartime action in the
early 1940s.
Meteorological flights,
reconnaissance, air-sea rescue,
night-time offensive operations and
anti-shipping patrols over the
North Sea all took place from
Docking.
Today, little remains ofthe
airfield. Most ofthe buildings have
been removed and the surrounding
landscape restored to agriculture.Desirability

village life is thriving, despite
the pressures ofour modern
world.
While the advance ofthe
supermarkets may have made
life tough for stores in the
smaller villages, there are
plenty oflively places that
have actually seen an increase
in local services.
For many local communities
have seen a big growth in
housing in the last twenty to
thirty years, with their
services expanding
accordingly.
And many specialist
businesses 8212 the kind of
people the public is prepared
to travel to in order to buy
their wares 8212 find a rural
location highly convenient,
especially as far as parking is
concerned.
