centre played host to a
8216Jimmy Savile Danceathon8217
for adults with disabilities
and learning difficulties.
The 40-strong group was
invited along by members of
the Lea Valley Branch of Toc
H and enjoyed the fun
alongside Broxbourne mayor
Cllr Carol Crump-Enyon and
previous mayor Charles
Tranham.
The Toc H charity dates back
to 1915 and is named after a
house in Belgium where
soldiers regardless of rank or
background were treated
during the First World War. It
holds community events
throughout the year.
Tony Osler, chairman of the
Lea Valley Branch of Toc H
volunteers, said: 8220About 30
years ago, Jimmy Saville
started up these events
around the country, that8217s
why we still name them after
him. We have carried them
on ever since.
8220The disco was a success
and enjoyed by all.8221PeopleSHOPPERS visiting Bircherley
Green in Hertford picked up
tips on recycling and
composting while making their
regular trip to stores.
Information stands were put up
in the centre on Friday to
promote national recycling
week.
East Herts Council distributed
leaflets and Gary Marsland,
who is funded by Herts County
Council, sold and talked about
home composting kits.
Bircherley Green managing
director Clive Galloway said:
8220People are interested in home
composting and want to know
more. Gary8217s role is very much
educational and everyone gets
involved.8221
Customers also made a stop at
Carphone Warehouse, which
collected unwanted mobile
phones.
SHOPPERS in Hertford got the
chance to learn some fancy
moves as they browsed
windows in the town.
Bircherley Green Shopping
Centre organised for instructors
to teach people how to dance.
The dance skills event is the
latest in a line run by the
shopping centre to keep visitors
entertained.
A Bircherley Green shopping
centre spokesman said: 8220It was a
great two-day event when people
could come to the centre to join
in and learn the arts of juggling
and dance.
8220Everyone who took part really
enjoyed themselves.
8220We had good weather for it
and we8217re doing a range of fun
days.8221Shoppers

aphasia awareBircherley
goes greenA COFFEE morning was held in Hertford to
raise awareness of a language disability.
Members of the town8217s speakability group
who suffer from aphasia, which affects
speech, reading and writing, talked about their
condition at the Methodist Church in Ware
Road.
Chairman Alison Suzan said: 8220It was extremely
successful. People who came knowing
nothing about it left knowing a little bit more.8221
The condition usually results from a stroke,
head injury, brain tumour or other neurological
illness such as multiple sclerosis (MS).
The national Speakability charity8217s vice-
president, Caroline Bowes Lyon, and Hertford
Mayor Cllr Kim Darby attended the event last
Thursday.
The group meets on the first Thursday of
every month.qFor information call 080 8808 9572 or visit
