The Maiden Voyage
April 2007
When joining Aquamarina's build team in March 2006, I knew one day
the yacht would be completed; we would be saying our farewells to
the shipyard and Yachting Partners International's Project Management
Team, and a great adventure would be about to begin.
That day came in January 2007.
I was determined to make the owners'first cruise an
unforgettable experience and proposed the
Seychelles as our first ever destination.We needed
to reposition Aquamarina over 3,300 miles on a
route that would take in the Suez Canal,the heavy
shipping lanes of the Red Sea,the threat of piracy
in the Gulf of Aden and a host of changing weather
systems.A daunting trip for a new yacht.However,
after a few discussions with Yachting Partners,a very
successful"shake-down"cruise,and the fact that we
would be entering an area I knew well...I began to
feel ever more confident!
The trip south took 16 days, including a fuel stop in Port Said and a
trouble-free Suez Canal transit into a mirror-calm Red Sea before crossing
the Equator.
On arrival in Port Victoria (Mah�),both the yacht and crew were in
excellent shape and we prepared for the owners'arrival whilst also
entertaining various yacht magazine photographers with a mini-cruise,
which succeeded in bringing Aquamarina up to boat show finish.
Before the owners'arrival,I remember walking around the yacht thinking
to myself,"Well,this is it.After so much hard work and input from all
involved in the past three years,tomorrow is when the owners start to
realise their vision and investment."
The boat looked immaculate,all systems were in order,the crew were
trained and motivated and we were located in one of the most beautiful
cruising areas in the world.Were we ready? Yes...one hundred percent!
AQUAMARINAWORLD CRUISE
The itinerary was based around the inner islands of the Seychelles chain
and for two weeks we were spoiled by the peaceful anchorages and the
crystal-clear waters around Mah�, St Anne, Praslin,
La Dique, Les Soeurs, Curieuse and Marianne. Diving,
snorkelling, fishing and exploring by kayak or tender
made for action-packed days,leaving evenings for
a bit of on-board relaxation or the chance to enjoy
one of the many high-quality resort spas ashore.
It was a pleasure to see the owners relax and
settle into their new floating home and the crew's
confidence went from strength to strength.
Mediterranean � In the Spotlight Summer 2007
A return to the Mediterranean was planned for
Summer 2007 and we began our return trip shortly
after the owners'departure from the Seychelles.
Although our route north was the reverse of that enjoyed a month earlier, it
was to prove far more challenging. On any new yacht there is an unspoken
understanding that it may well take time for all main engineering systems to
prove fully reliable. In our case, fate dealt us a challenging hand � several
problems hit us all at once. It is at times like this when the support provided
by your management company is most apparent and valued. After
detailing our problems to Yachting Partners and requesting spare parts we
headed for the port of Aden � a rather uninviting prospect had it not been
for the on-board security consultants Yachting Partners had supplied for
the trip and thanks to whom I felt comfortable enough spending the short
period needed at anchor for repairs. On arrival the spare parts were waiting
and within a few hours our engineers had us underway.
Returning to the shipyard for completion of some outstanding warranty
work, Yachting Partners once again had everything prepared with the good
co-operation of ISA so that within a fortnight we were in good shape and
ready to head off once more.
