major showLITTLE BERKHAMSTED:
Villagers were united at a fun
afternoon held at the recre-
ation field offChurch Road on
Sunday.They enjoyed a hog roast,
rounders match, children8217s
games and a dog show 8211 in which
one pooch wore a denim jacket
while another sported a bow tie.
Sandie Ash, who chairs the vil-
lage recreation committee which
organised the activities, said:
8220The purpose ofthe event was
not to raise money: we8217re only a
small village.
8220The purpose was to bring the
village together as a community
and encourage new people who
have come to our village to get
together and have a bit offun 8211
and it worked.
8220As a family community-orien-
tated event, we were very pleased
with the result.
8220These days people8217s lives have
changed so drastically, working
long hours and at weekends. You
have to try to have a get-together.8221
One ofthe main aims ofthe
recreation committee is to put on
and promote such events to keep
the community going strong.
Visitors also browsed various
stalls, took part in a raffle and
chatted under a pavilion.
The dogs had a particularly
lively time and took great pleas-
ure in jumping in and out ofa
paddling pool.Fun in the sunMUCH HADHAM:
A painting by an
artist from the village has been
selected to appear at the Royal
Academy8217s summer exhibition.
Nelda Utilini8217s
Hill ofCrosses
was
selected by judges for the largest
open exhibition in the world and is at
the prestigious gallery in Piccadilly,
central London.
The painting,
which was one of
two entered by
Nelda, was
inspired by the
BBC8217s
New Europe
documentary with
Michael Palin.
Nelda,
pictured
right, said: 8220I became aware ofthe
Hill ofCrosses while watching the
documentary about Lithuania and
was struck by the peaceful beauty
and their vital symbolism ofthe
Lithuanian spirit that many an
occupying army tried to crush.8221
Nelda, ofLordship Cottages, who
lived in Cuffley for 40 years, said she
was 8220delighted8221 that one ofher
pieces was chosen; it is the eighth
time this honour has been bestowed
upon her.
The exhibition opened on Tuesday
and runs until Sunday August 17.WINNER:
