Tendring Business Guide
DOUGLAS Carswell, MP for
Clacton and Harwich, says
Tendring must mean business.
Local businesses are vital to
the well-being of our commu-
nity. If they prosper, we all do
well. If they find it tough, we all
suffer.
I support our local businesses
100 per cent, and I have tried to
learn as much as I can about them.
What I have discovered has
impressed me.
Here in Tendring, we have some
world-class players, like the
agribusiness Syngenta. It finds
new ways to help farmers across
the world, and reduce our
dependence on costly fertilizers
and pesticides. It is quite
something to know that we are
home to such a leading global play-
er.
Just as impressive is the small
retail shop I visited in Walton. The
owner, who runs it as a family
concern, is looking at new ways to
provide services that will help
pensioners pay their fuel bills.
On the face of it these two busi-
nesses have little in common. But
they do. Both innovate and find
new ways of doing things for the
benefit of their customers. Large or
small, each business provides good
incomes for local families.
We can be proud of these success
stories, and hope that there will be
many more in the future.
However, local business faces
challenges ahead. I believe that
this is all the more reason to help
and support our local business
community.
Firstly, business faces too much
regulation. No-one ever brings in
new rules deliberately to hurt
businesses, but that is what has
happened. For too many years,
politicians have talked about "cut-
ting red tape" but never have.
That is why, as your MP, I will be
proposing the Great Repeal Bill.
This is a law I want to see enacted
by Parliament to scrap all those
unnecessary laws and red tape. It
will axe dozens of measures that
hamper local businesses and free
our local entrepreneurs from a lot
of form-filling.
Secondly, it was clear to me at a
recent meeting of the Federation of
Small Business in Holland-on-Sea,
that government is taxing our local
businesses too much. Businessmen
and women not politicians are
society's true wealth creators. We
need to stop taxing them the way
we do and cut business taxes.
Finally, we need to ensure that
local decision-makers do not do
things that actively harm local
businesses. For example, any
decision to relocate the Clacton
driving test centre has the poten-
tial to really harm members of the
Clacton and District Driving
Instructors, not to mention dozens
of hotels and B&Bs. We need a
Clacton test drive centre, and
small business depends on it.
Similarly, decisions about
parking in Clacton town centre can
have a major impact on retailers.
We need to ensure that the coun-
cil listens to local business con-
cerns, and that business has a
strong voice. I am working to help
Clacton retailers and to support
the Clacton and District Driving
Instructors.
Let's all get behind our local
businesses!

BUSINESSES in Tendring are
on the up.
The Gazette's first Tendring
Business Guide features an
array of firms across the dis-
trict who have got a success
story to share.
At at a time when every other
item in the national media fea-
tures the phrase "credit
crunch", local companies are
proving they can still make an
impact in the marketplace.
From restaurants to gyms,
hairdressers to home improve-
ment experts, the businesses
in this section are showing the
flair and commitment to ride
the storm.
Pierre Oxley, chairman of
Clacton's Chamber of Trade
and Tourism, said: "The key is
good customer service and
selling the right product at the
right price at the right time.
"There are some sectors
doing well. Generally they are
working hard on their customer
service and offering something
different from the big multi-
nationals. I'm delighted to see
local retailers doing well."
