With petrol prices skyrocketing at speeds NASA would be proud of, it's generally deemed
to be a good idea to try and save a bit of fuel here and there. Green cars come in many
variations, with economical diesels and hybrid cars being by far the most popular, and it's
worth remembering it's not just fuel costs you save. Lower tax bands mean more money
in your pocket and less in the Government's, and some are even exempt from London's
congestion charge, making these cars real winners if you prefer to hold on to your cash.
Toyota Prius
17,932
The car of choice for celebrities and
politicians who need to be seen being
green, the Prius is an unusual looking
hatchback with unquestionably impressive
fuel economy. However, returning nearly
66mpg in it won't be the most involving
drive you've ever experienced.
Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi
ECOnetic
17,400
An excellent blend of performance and
economy, the Focus has a well-proven
background and is actually quite good fun
to throw about. There's enough room for
all the family's kit, and if you're light
footed it'll hit nearly 63mpg.
Volkswagen Polo
Bluemotion
12,125
Sign the forms on the 1.4 TDI version of
Volkswagen's runabout, and you'll see
nearly 80mpg from its weight-saving
measures, aerodynamics and modified
gearbox. Smart-looking and well built,
it's not fun to drive but you won't care.
Our choice
Lexus GS450h 33,205
Proving that economical motoring
doesn't have to be a compromise on
space, power and comfort, the GS450h is
a genuine alternative to high-
performance German machinery.
The Lexus will hit 60mph from rest in
5.9 seconds, making it quicker and more
economical than any other variant,
including the V8, and it doesn't just save
the pennies in the fuel department, either.
The GS450h is also more tax friendly
thanks to its hybrid drive.
For being a proper luxury car
with sports car performance, while at the
same time using hybrid technology to
better even the economy of its diesel
equivalent, the Lexus GS450h is our
favourite green car.
