Village LifeTUESDAY
Lynn News, April 17, 200711
Website: www.lynnnews.co.ukGOODERSTONE is
the very epitome ofa
peaceful, Norfolk
village with its one,
very long, street and
the little River Gadder
flowing parallel to the
village.
The Gadder is
reputed to be one of
the cleanest rivers in
Norfolk, and while the
lane from the church
through to the
Cockley Cley road is
liable to flooding from
time to time, it8217s
nothing too serious.
The lovely water
gardens, described
elsewhere on this
page, are open to the
public and proving as
popular as ever.ONE ofthe few villages locally with a
river, the Wissey, running along its
outskirts, Stoke Ferry also has a Common
and pleasant riverside walks to enjoy.
There is plenty happening within the
community, with developments afoot that
are increasing local amenities.
Pupils ofJames Bradfield School have
been cutting a CD ofsongs and hymns,
sung and chosen by the children and
staff. It is hoped the finished CD will be
available to parents and friends to buy in
due course.
The recently formed Young At Heart
Club has got offto a rousing start and has
many activities planned for the rest ofthe
year, including a trip to Belgium and a
summer garden fete.
Stoke Ferry Festival this year will be
held over the weekend ofSeptember 22nd-
23rd.
West Norfolk Music Society8217s 2007
Festival, which features a richly-variedTHE name Fincham
doesn8217t just apply to a
village in West Norfolk
8212 it is a surname of
people who can be
found world-wide, as
well as in Norfolk.
The name is Anglo-
Saxon, and probably
means 8216The home of
the finches,8217 although
there may be other
explanations.
The Fincham family,
who were Lords of the
Manor of Fincham for
500 years from the
Norman Conquest
onwards, have now
spread throughout the
English-speaking
world, and even have
their own website at
www.finchams.orgLIKE Cockley Cley, Great Cressingham is
a hamlet, rather than a village, and it also
has a popular pub, in this case The
Windmill Inn, which is a favourite
8216watering hole8217 with cyclists and walkers.
The hamlet also has a Victorian School
Museum which is popular with school
parties. Great Cressingham National
School was built in 1840 and used as a
local authority school up until 1992.
It was then acquired by Tom and Sally
North and they have restored it to how it
would have been in Victorian times.
Visits by schools are free ofcharge, but
it is essential to book as early as possible,
as they have proved enormously popular
over the years.GOODERSTONE Water Gardens and Nature
Trail covers an area of approximately six acres
with a natural trout stream, four ponds,
waterways, 13 bridges, grass paths, mature
trees and shrubs and colourful bog plants and
perennial borders.
In addition, there is a wildlife area and nature
trail covering a further eight acres. This now
includes a kingfisher hide overlooking a lagoon
8212 and in summer, visitors report seeing
kingfishers almost on a daily basis.
Otters have also been seen in the area in
recent times, both in the river and even in the
water gardens, although sightings are rare.
The gardens were created from wetmeadows in the 1970s by the late Billy and
Florence Knights, and their work has been
continued by the later generations of the family.
It8217s a unique attraction for all garden lovers,
naturalists, artists and photographers 8212 or
those who simply want a restful break.
Gooderstone also has a bamboo garden, and a
scented garden is being created this year. The calm setting
